General Overview
PIPELEAK monitors oil and gas pipelines day and night for the occurrence of any leak. It operates on the basis of SCADA measurements at the two pipeline ends. Ultra-fast leak response, accurate leak locating, and reliable and detailed notification and reporting will help your company reduce the risks of environmental damage and revenue loss. State-of-the-art design of PIPELEAK uses a comprehensive combination of all the best leak detection methodologies available.
PIPELEAK provides the comprehensive solution to pipeline leak detection by distinguishing the normal transient flows from a leak occurrence.  It is sensitive to small leaks and insensitive to signal and system noise PIPELEAK’s solution includes the following: *1
  • Announcing a leak occurrence within two minutes

  • Locating the leak within 500 m

  • Awareness of a small leak over 2% of average flow rate

  • Applicable to single gas or liquid pipelines up to 100 km in length

  • Monitors multiple lines and branches (gathering system)

PIPELEAK functions by monitoring the signature flowing profile of your pipeline. A leak causes irregularities in the flowing profile that conduct to the pipeline ends at the speed of sound. PIPELEAK monitors these irregularities and eliminates system and measurement noise to produce the most reliable and comprehensive leak detection utility available.
The following methods are integrated into PIPELEAK to ensure a precise and reliable solution:
  • Mass Balance (MB): Calculating the leak rate by comparing the measured inlet and outlet flow rates. Consideration is taken for the line pack changes and alarming by the SPRT algorithm, based on Neyman-Pearson's probability ratio
  • Pressure Point Analysis (PPA):Catching the initial occurrence of the pressure loss at the two pipeline ends, also locating the leak with the time differential and wave transfer speed along the pipeline

  • Pipeline Profile (PP): Locating the leak by analysis of the pressure profile.
  • Realtime Transient Model (RTM): Detecting the leak according to the flow rate discrepancy between the measurements and prediction of the online transient model
If the required measurements at the two pipeline ends are available from SCADA, the implementation of PIPELEAK is quite easy and fast.Installation, configuration, and fine tuning for an existing SCADA system is approximately 2 - 3 weeks. PIPELEAK provides the flexibility to cover a large variety of pipeline systems and track measurements on a case - to - case basis.  It can monitor several pipelines simultaneously and can be applied on a large pipeline system with many lines and branches. The detection methods are selectable according to the measurements available.
A close look at the measurement noise level and the correct setting of the leak detection thresholds are important to eliminate false alarms.  Regardless, a simulation of different leak scenarios for your particular system will help determine how small a leak can be detected for a specific pipeline. PIPELEAK is currently monitoring 24 pipeline systems with a  total length of 3178.7 km ranging in size from Φ159 mm to Φ 711 mm.
